For ease of understanding, Low carb can be classified into 3 categories

    1. Liberal Low Carb:

This is where 100–150 grams of carbs is taken daily. This class of low carb is usually for weight maintenance and for people people who do regular or intense exercise, or for people who are sensitive to carb restriction. Examples of the liberal low carb diets are The Eco-Atkins and Zone diet.

    2. Moderate Low Carb:

In this class of low carb, 50–100 grams of carbs is consumed per day. This helps with weight loss at a much slower rate than the strict lowcarb class and can also help to control glucose levels. This level of carbohydrate consumption is the recommended level for breastfeeding moms on a ketogenic diet. Atkins 40

    3. Strict Low Carb:

This is the category where the ketogenic diet falls. Here, carb intake is restricted to 0-50 grams per day. This strict carb restriction is ideal for people who want to lose weight fast and enter ketosis a state where the body uses ketones for energy instead of glucose. This strict low carb diet has been found to be particularly helpful in the reversal of certain health conditions like Type 2 Diabetes, PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Cancer. The ketogenic and Atkins 20 diets are a form of strict low carb diet.
