I was born with the 'FAT' gene, meaning I have a higher tendency to be overweight than others no matter what I did. Whether I eat less or eat more, exercise less or exercise more, that tendency was always there. Now that I am a doctor I think when people talk about the fat gene it simply means the person has some form of insulin resistance.

Weight loss is merely a side effect of a low carb lifestyle

Growing up for me was a cycle of trying this and that to keep in shape. Some worked, some didn't. I remember one funny episode back in Med school when one of my friends and I decided to travel to Enugu one weekend to go and lock our jaws. My goodness. We were supposed to live on fluids and pureed fruits for a while to achieve weight loss.

We went to the dentist and got our jaws wired together aka locked our jaws and left for home ( my friend lives in Enugu) where her mom had graciously prepared our dinner of pureed fruits. I was in pain because my teeth didn't seem to want to take to this weight management procedure. My friend was fine. We decided to wait it out and if the pain didn't get better we would go back to the Dentist the next day. We enjoyed our first liquid dinner of pureed fruits and went to bed.

The next morning I was still in pain so we decided to pay the Dentist a visit. It turned out that my problems were from my dentition, I have an open bite so my teeth was finding it difficult to stay aligned with the torture I was putting it through lol

I decided I was going to take it off because I didn't want to risk travelling back to school and having problems. He took the wires out. I don't recall getting a refund. My friend had hers on for a while, she lost some weight but quickly regained the weight lost when she came off the diet.

Now what is my point of telling this story? I want us to know that in the quest for a healthy weight and lifestyle, the KEY ingredient we should be looking for is SUSTAINABILITY. Ask yourself, how you will fare when You attain your goal? Will you be able to maintain that goal you have worked so hard to achieve?

This question is for everyone that wants s lifestyle change. For a diet to be sustainable you just have to make it a lifestyle. So stick to a diet you know you can live with at least for the most part of your life.

It is true that PERSISTENCE gets us to our goal and CONSISTENCY keeps us there. BUT we have to be consistent with what is SUSTAINABLE.
