I love this recipe because it's one of the easiest recipes you will ever make and requires just two ingredients. Unsulphured Molasses and your favorite Granular sugar substitute of choice ( not powdered ) I love to use Xylitol*, Erythritol or Lakanto Classic sweeteners. You can also make this with a mix of sweeteners. I like to keep things simple so I usually use one sweetener.

    * Xylitol is safe in humans but not safe in dogs. Please keep away from your pets or use Erythritol instead.

Before you ask... Aren't molasses made from sugar? Yes they are but the amount of molasses used in this recipe is so little compared to the regular Brown Sugar and will be negligible when used in a Whole recipe and portioned.

1 Tablespoon (Tbsp) of Molasses contains 15 g of carbohydrates while 1 teaspoon (tsp) has only 5g of carbs. In this recipe I used 1 teaspoon of unsulpuhured molasses to 1 ½ cup of sweetener with a serving size of 1 teaspoon which means this recipe has 72 servings which amounts to 0.9g of carbs per serving. Even if you decide to use up to a tablespoon of this recipe, a serving will be 2.7g

How to make this sugar free brown sugar

As easy as ABC. Seriously it is. No equipment needed that is if you don't mind getting your hands a little messy. You can get your little ones to help out with that. Make sure to remind them to wash their hands before and after the mixing game lol.

You just mix the molasses and sugar substitute till evenly combined. See Pictorial guide below.

Homemade Sugar free Brown sugar This recipe has the moist and stacking properties of regular brown sugar. See why this is all you need ?

    Pro tips

I find it easier to mix when You Pour the molasses into the sugar free sweetener and not the other way round.

If you don't want to use your hands or your little ones are not around you when you want to make this sugar free brown sugar you could use a fork or preferably a food processor ( which is way easier than the fork but you will have an extra kitchen equipment to wash) I guess you see why I would rather use my clean hands ?

I also prefer to use my hands or the food processor over the fork because of the consistency of the molasses. It's thick and not so spreadable. It takes quite some elbow grease and patience to use the fork.

Your hands or food processor help to break up the clumps easily and get your brown sugar substitute ready faster.

How to store Homemade Sugar Free Brown Sugar

You can make your homemade sugar free brown sugar substitute as needed or you can make a large batch to store for later. Just like you would store your regular brown sugar, this sugar free substitute can be stored in an air tight container or a freezer bag.

    Instructions

I typically use about 4-5 heaping spoons of brown sugar in my bbq sauce which my family loves. I have not been able to have bbq chicken since going Keto. I wonder how to determine the carbs if I used your recipe for brown sugar. Tips would be greatly appreciated.

        Hi Pam.
I would be happy to help. This recipe uses 1 tsp per 1 1/2 cup of sweetener ( monkfruit, erythritol or xylitol )

A teaspoon of this recipe will have 0.9g of carbs while a Tablespoon would be 2.7g. I think you should measure by teaspoon or Tablespoon of keto brown sugar when making your BBQ sauce then divide as per the number of serving your sauce yields that way you can have an idea of how many carbs you have in there. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by. ?

Your recipe does 1 1/2 Xylitol, I am assuming you meant to say 1 1/2 cups?

        Hi Kathy,

Yes you can use stevia or any other sweetener of your choice. The second ingredient is molasses. Hope that helps. Thanks for stopping by 😊

PS: you can put everything in a freezer bag like ziplock and mix till combined if you’d rather not use your hands.

I am guessing 2:1 real to substitute?

          Hi Nic,

See my response above 👍 It would depend on the sweetener used. Hope that helps.

        Hi Nik,

Great question. That would depend on the sweetener used as the base. For instance if the sweetener used converts 1:1 for regular sugar, like the erythritol- monkfruit blend. then the brown sugar substitute will convert 1:1.

If you use allulose or erythritol as the base bearing in mind that erythritol is 70% as sweet as sugar you will need 1 1/3 cup of Erythritol based brown sugar for 1 cup of regular brown sugar.

Hope that answers your question. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions I am always happy to help.
